Hanna Palei
art manager/curator/cultural programs producer
Belarusian cultural manager and curator. Hanna Palei (b.1987) studied European Cultural Foundation program (art management). Her curated projects are about local identity, feminizm and living ordinary life in Belarusian context. She is the founder of cultural and educational platform in Belarus (pershykrok.by), established 2018 as local art actors network for studies and practice of new media. Among her curatorial projects: International festival "Month of Photography" (regional program, theme: Survival, 2020), Series of audio-visual female portraits "Authentic" (2021), Educational art program "Palesse in Focus" (2022).
Role: curator/digital/text Palesse in focus — an interdisciplinary program for the art community from Palesse region in Belarus that offers wide spectrum formats: workshops, lectures, discussions. Belarus has been in a deep political crisis since 2020. People still live under stress and constant threat of arrest and repression. The idea of program was to give an opportunity to research everyday life experience in modern Belarus and to create a field for reflection and collaborative art. During the program, the participants managed to become observes in their lives and prepared projects which can be points of support in stress situation. Role: regional curator, text Open call for local photo society within the theme of Month of Photography festival. Artists and photographers were invited to explore the topic "Survival". Despite the fact that the topic was supposed to be an ecological focus, the process was able to expand it. The resulting projects researched of the disappearing elements of urban infrastructure (The cities I don’t live, Julia Shatun), the man against nature (Ivan Yelmolin "Аsker"), life in industrialized city (Veronika Litvin), Human transformation under the influence of modern technology (Simbiosis, Ira Cherniakova). Role: curator, author Authentic — series of audio-visual female portraits who soaking up the the atmosphere of the city in which they grew up, but never come back. Artist, film director and poet talk about the feeling of small city and reality. This project is researching work about the experience of living in the small Belarusian city and its influence to future projects and formation on personalities. In the process of simple conversations with the women of the project come up memories are still place to be in our society: gender stereotypes, lack of prospects, domestic violence, aggressive social environment. In the project it was important for me to show how this experience could be transformed into future art works and be used as a basis for the further development of the personality. All texts were published without editing. Portraits are not just a static photograph of person, but also audio, video and text. Such compilation apply to come as close as possible to members.
